Biography
Born in Barcelona in 1931, Josep Castaño Colomer joined the JOC in 1946.
He became a teacher and trade unionist
In 1946 he joined the Christian Working Youth (JOC), which came to be vocal responsible Catalonia in 1951. From 1957 to 1959 he worked in the Secretariat of the JOC in Brusselsand in 1962 in the foundation of the publishing Terra Nova. Between 1960 and 1970 he worked with CCOO and the Union Sindical Obrera, and since 1974 he joined the Democratic Convergence of Catalonia.
In 1974, he published a history of the JOC in Catalonia entitled Memòries sobre la JOC a Catalunya, 1932-1970.
From 1975 to 1981 he was president of the Fundació Roca i Galés for promoting cooperatives.
In 1981 he was appointed by the Catalan government as director-general of cooperatives.
In 1985 he was named director of the Institute for the Promotion and Training of Cooperatives (Institut per a la Promoció i la Formació de Cooperatives), a role he held until his retirement in 1996.
Porcel i Omar published a biography of Josep Castaño i Colomer in 2011.
